All of our team members here at The Pines Dental know how important a straight, healthy smile is. A beautifully straight smile always leaves a lasting first impression.
What most people don’t know is that straight teeth can also make a difference in chewing, speaking, and jaw alignment. Dr. Pampena's goal in treating patients is maintaining overall health while enhancing confidence and giving patients the smile they’ve always wanted!
Orthodontics treats improperly positioned teeth; aside from being unhappy with the look of their teeth, many of our suffering patients complain of headaches, neck pain, dizziness, fainting, clicking or locking of jaws, ringing in the ears or earaches. Braces, appliances and orthodontic treatments apply gentle pressure to move teeth to their desired position. Orthodontics can improve both the appearance and the function of your teeth, give you a straighter profile, healthier jaw joints and even let you breathe better!
Here at The Pines Dental, we have a robust orthodontics program. Dr. Pampena and Dr. Palencar provide meticulous, experienced and cutting edge care. Our orthodontic patients and their parents quickly realize the value of this treatment, since they receive a full mouth makeover for a fraction of the cost of crowns and implants.
If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with one of our The Pines Dental team members today!
Many children who need orthodontic treatment due to a bad bite have underdeveloped lower jaws. Dr. Pampena and Dr. Palencar utilize functional appliances which can reposition the lower jaw forward, improve your child’s profile and correct the bite problem within 7 to 9 months.
Why are functional appliances so important?
Functional appliances which can help correct and can often prevent: Bite problems, underdeveloped jaws, narrow arches, crowded teeth, deep overbites, jaw joint problems, airway problems and thumb-sucking habits. Many children with narrow jaws, deep overbites or receding lower jaws have unhealthy jaw joints which can cause:
Headaches and neck pain
Dizziness and fainting
Earaches or ringing in the ears
Clicking and locking jaws, or difficulty opening jaws
Deep overbites and receding lower jaws may cause earaches, stuffiness or ringing in the ears. If infection has been ruled out, functional appliances can eliminate these symptoms effectively.
Mouth breathing can lead to orthodontic problems as well as other problems such as poor sleep habits. This can leave children prone to daytime fatigue, an inability to concentrate in school and headaches. Mouth breathing can cause narrow arches and unattractive smiles. By using functional appliances while children are actively growing, Dr. Pampena and the team here in Welland, ON can help them achieve a broad, beautiful smile and prevent many issues.
Due to the fact that younger children between the ages of 8 and 11 are often much more cooperative than children between the ages of 12 to 14, the use of functional appliances becomes very smart. As well, early phase one treatment with functional appliances will probably mean that your child will need to wear fixed braces on their adult teeth for less time.
Crowded teeth are caused by narrow arches. Developing the arches at an early age may prevent or eliminate the crowding of permanent teeth and often eliminates the need to remove any adult teeth. Narrow jaws can confine the tongue and interfere with normal speech. Functional appliances help ensure proper growth and greatly enhance your child’s ability to speak normally.
Dr. Pampena and his Welland, ON dental team’s early use of functional appliances can prevent or eliminate the need for the removal of adult teeth and lengthy use of braces, speech difficulties and crowding.
Early phase one treatment with functional appliances, (ages 5 to 12), should be initiated for habits such as tongue thrusting and thumb sucking, a constricted airway due to swollen adenoids or tonsils, mouth breathing or snoring problems, a bad bite or narrow or underdeveloped jaws. Dr. Pampena suggests that it is critical to correct any functional or jaw problems as soon as they are diagnosed. During phase two, (ages 12 to 14), your child’s teeth are straightened with braces, which usually take about 1½ to 2 years.
A functional appliance may provide your child with improved appearance and speech. Dr. Pampena and his Welland, ON team of professionals here at The Pines Dental take great pride in helping children to have the healthiest most beautiful smile possible. Orthodontic treatment is no longer just for teens. Many adults are choosing to receive treatment because they understand the importance of maintaining their health, and they want to feel better about their appearance. Adults everywhere are taking advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too.
Common reasons why adults are considering orthodontic treatment:
A bad bite or malocclusion, causing teeth to fit together incorrectly
Teeth are crowded or spaced apart, possibly leading to tooth decay or gum disease
Abnormal jaw pain or pressure that is caused by crooked teeth
Desire for a healthier mouth and a more confident smile
The main difference between treating adults and children or teens is that the jawbones of younger patients are still developing. For adults, these bones have stopped growing, which may make orthognathic surgery possible to align the jawbones. Other differences include:
Gum or bone loss (periodontal disease) — Adults are more likely than children to experience gum recession or even bone loss due to gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease. Patients with straighter teeth are less likely to get gum disease.
Worn or missing teeth — Over time teeth can become worn down and shift into different positions that can only be corrected with orthodontic care. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift and tilt, creating a bad bite and increasing the possibility of gum disease.
Incomplete orthodontic treatment as a teen — Many adults received some orthodontic treatment as a child or teen, but never completed their treatment. As an adult, they choose to complete their orthodontic treatment to achieve the healthy, beautiful smile they always wanted.
The Pines Dental also recognizes that adults and children have different needs, and require a different level of attention and care. Dr. Pampena will work with you to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatments, and that your needs are met with understanding and respect from us.
Why should you consider orthodontic treatment?
Straight teeth are healthy teeth — Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to keep clean with flossing and brushing which may help prevent other health problems.
A beautiful, straight smile builds confidence — Orthodontic treatment can help boost your self-confidence, giving you a better quality of life and the freedom to smile without holding back!
Mouths left untreated can get worse — Not receiving orthodontic treatment when it's needed can create long-term health issues costing you more in the end.

Orthodontic treatment using clear aligners (Invisalign® style) is an effective method to treat simple cases.
Many adults and adolescents prefer this method because the aligners that straighten the teeth are nearly invisible while being worn. A series of aligners are used sequentially to progressively move the teeth into their desired position.
At The Pines Dental, we offer clear aligners orthodontics, but it is important to talk with Dr. Pampena and Dr. Palencar to ensure you are a good candidate for this popular treatment option.
